Education helps healing process

BARE BONES: Around 30 per cent of people suffer chronic musculoskeletal conditions with 14 per cent to 19 per cent aged 35-plus.Musculoskeletal pain is a common occurrence and left untreated can affect quality of life.

SUPPORTING YOUR FAMILY: Dr David Diehm, from Family Life Chiropractic, has years of experience treating musculoskeletal pain.

Types of musculoskeletal pain include low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, cervicogenic headaches and fibromyalgia. Causes are often related to posture, screen time, repetitive activities, injury and/or trauma.

According to Dr David Diehm, chiropractor, from Family Life Chiropractic. treatment will vary depending on your history, type of injury and level of pain,

“After an acute injury, seeking advice early will ensure you are taking the most appropriate actions to support your body in the healing process,” Dr Diehm said.

“Failure to restore correct function will increase the likelihood of chronic pain.”

Data from the Australian Government’s Burden of Disease Report suggestsaround 30 per cent of people suffer chronic conditions.

Once an issue has become chronic in nature a holistic, multi-disciplinary, lifestyle approach needs to be considered, Dr Diehm said.

“Growing evidence suggests that changes within the brain and nervous system may influence and contribute to chronic nerve and musculoskeletal pain.

“Coined “neuroplasticity”, the body has the ability to change its nerve pathways dependent on the information it receives from the environment. In people experiencing chronic pain these changes can make their bodies more sensitive and in effect turn up the pain dial.

“Improving spine alignment and joint function will help lighten the load on your nervous system which supports the body’s ability to heal itself naturally.”

Dr Diehmemphasises education to help empower and inspire people to take control of their own health and lifestyle.

“Pain is the body’s alarm system,” he said.“It is a symptom to protect you, but the cause is often elsewhere.

“You should expect your health specialist to find the cause of your problem by looking closely at all aspects of your health and lifestyle and work in partnership with you to provide self-management strategies.”
